Chinese smartphone brand Honor is gearing up to return to the Indian market with a new phone expected to be released next month. As reported by Reuters, the brand has signed a licensing agreement with the new Gurugram-based Honor Tech, which aims to launch three variants of the smartphone. The India division, led by former Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth, aims to start manufacturing its phones locally as early as 2024. The report cites Sheth as noting that all Honor Tech smartphones “will eventually be manufactured in India.” The report adds that the company, which is 100% owned by local shareholders, will manufacture, sell and service Honor-branded smartphones in India. Sheth also suggested that the Indian unit would work with the government. He added, “The biggest challenge with the (Indian) government in the past was how can a (Chinese) brand be held accountable in India.”

Meanwhile, Honor Tech has announced a partnership with PSAV Global to expand its “smartphone network in India”. This partnership is part of the government’s desire to achieve technological self-sufficiency and marks an important step in this direction.

Based on the leaks, Honor may introduce the Honor 90 for around Rs 35,000 domestically. The phone was launched with Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, 200MP camera and up to 12GB RAM in China in May 2023. The phone also supports 66W fast charging. Other key specs include 5G, a 5,000mAh battery, a 6.60-inch Full HD+ display, and a custom interface based on Android 13.

Honor Tech is expected to capture 5% of the Indian smartphone market share by sales by 2024. According to the latest IDC report, Vivo leads the Indian smartphone market with 16% in the first half of 2023. Samsung takes second place with 15.7% market share, followed by Realme (12.6%), Oppo (11%) and Xiaomi (11%).

Honor’s decision to introduce a premium mid-range phone could also stem from India’s move towards premium phones.
