Luka Modric Delays Decision on International Retirement with Croatia

Luka Modric, the captain of the Croatian national team, has delayed his decision regarding his international retirement. He led Croatia to the final of the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League against Spain, which took place in Rotterdam. The match ended in a goalless draw after regulation time and extra time.

Despite Croatia’s reputation for performing well in extra time and penalties, they were unable to secure the victory in the subsequent shootout. Modric calmly converted his spot kick, but his Real Madrid teammate, Dani Carvajal, scored the winning penalty for Spain.

It was expected that Modric would announce his international future after the final, regardless of the outcome. However, at the end of the match, he revealed that he would take more time before making a decision. According to reports from Marca, Modric stated, “I have decided my future, but I’m not going to say it today.”

Croatia has six Euro 2024 qualifiers scheduled between September and November, with no matches planned for 2023. The timing of these qualifiers could play a significant role in Modric’s decision, particularly if he wishes to continue leading his country at Euro 2024
